Why Sociology as an Optional?
Sociology has emerged as a popular optional subject among UPSC aspirants. Undoubtedly, it is a very important optional subject in the UPSC scheme of CSE Examination. The sole reason attributed to this could be because Sociology is included in the UPSC CSE Preliminary Exam and in the UPSC CSE Mains general studies papers in general and General Studies Paper 1 in specific. One can’t afford to ignore the holistic study of Sociology that includes Ancient India, Medieval India and Modern India along with a new addition in GS Mains Paper i.e. World Sociology and developments in India post independence.
Many aspirants enquire as to, ‘is it a good optional subject for the UPSC mains?’ or ‘How is Sociology as optional for UPSC?’, ‘Is Sociology a scoring optional?’ Since we have understood the importance of optional subjects, we can now choose optional subjects based on many parameters.
Let’s deliberate on the fact part: In CSE 2015; 1761 candidates appeared for the UPSC mains with Sociology as their optional subject. Out of that, 150 candidates got selected which gives it a success rate of 8.5%. This figure is quite assuring if compared to other optionals. It would be abstract and mechanical to say Sociology as good or bad optional. It depends on a candidate’s interests and aptitude in a subject that makes it suitable or not for the civil services exam.
Sociology is a scientific, objective, analytical subject. Not only this, Sociology would help one write good essay. One could get a lot of good points and also aid in writing Introduction of essay, which is one of the most important part. Needless to say that this subject would also help one develop deep insights and analyse the socio-economic conditions of various phases and he/she could well compare this to today’s times. Since, it is not a scholar-dynamic subject, so one could expect things to remain same by the time he/she is preparing for CSE (No doubt the current excavation or discoveries also help you learn well) and you could be confident once you practice all previous years questions of this subject.
